Re: [RC] annual rabies or not? - Anderson, Kristie LynnYes. There are a dozen donkeys on the property owned by a vet at A&M, and he and one of his colleagues both agreed that if the skunk tested positive everyone on the property should be boostered, even mine. Vaccines are never 100%, as much as we would like them to be. There's a chance, though small, that the January vaccine didn't induce sufficient immunity, or that it did, and if the skunk did manage to come into contact with one of my boys, it presented a challenge greater than what the vaccine could prevent. ----- Original Message ----- From: "sherman" <sherman@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, April 16, 2008 12:37:32 AM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central Subject: [RC] annual rabies or not? Is a second vaccination recommended so soon, even if a rabid skunk was in the horse’s pasture? Kathy I definately keep all my horses (and dogs) vaccinated for rabies. Brazos Valley is a hotbed for rabid skunks - usually see 2-5 per year, and the number is increasing. Actually am awaiting the State lab to send the results on a skunk that was found and shot in my geldings pasture on Friday in midday showing neurologic problems. Will go ahead and booster everyone again, even though they were all vaccinated in January. Rabies is a core vaccine because the vaccine is very effective and the disease is deadly. That's good enough for me. Kris =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
