Re: [RC] [RC] re: bears in CA - Karen Sullivan

Cindy, somewhat presumptious of you to assume I was not distressed by
the demise of my chickens (I am trying not to let this get personal)
....however, badly I felt about it, or failed to act quickly enough, I
still don't think the loss of my chickens was reason to trap, poison
or kill whatever predator that did it....

You are right that I don't see that 50 feral cats and perhaps as many
breeding and diseased pigs have any more value than a mountain lion.
When a family moves to a rural area, and lets everything in sight
breed to the point of starvation, unattended injuries and beyond
carrying capacity to their few acres, yet can get a permit to shoot
and kill the mountail lion that picks up one sick cat....that is
ethically and morally wrong.....after all, they are the one that
ATTRACTED the lion to their backyard.

As I mentioned, we do have exposure to some wildlife in my area, and
so far have managed to coexist along with it, and actually enjoy the
sightings.

The world will suffer greatly with the loss of the big predators.
There are places people should not live, attempt to raise livestock,
ride or recreate. To get this back to being somewhat endurance
related, I also believe there are areas and trails where horses should
not be allowed, and places where PEOPLE in general should not be
allowed, except for perhaps scientists who are careful and doing
studies....
Karen.

I have no problems with wolves and grizzlies, Karen, only with people who
want them in my backyard, but not in theirs. You may not be one of those
people, but there are plenty of them out there. If and when you ever really
do have grizzlies or wolf packs in your backyard, I'd like to know if you
feel the same way. Until then, it's only conjecture. Of course, you didn't
feel any distress about your poor chickens, so maybe you only feel
compassion for non-domestic animals. We all have our unique perspective on
the world. We ridecampers can argue about weight divisions and horse shoes
until we're ready to strangle each other. We're way off topic now so
should probably give this one up before Steph spanks our hands :) Cindy
