[RC] Marsh Tackys - rides2far@xxxxxxxxInteresting article about the effort to save the Marsh Tacky ponies (horses) of South Carolina. http://enews.earthlink.net/article/nat?guid=20080415/48042840_3421_1334520080415-1664195165 I'd never heard of one of these until last summer when Danny Herlong bought two. He showed up at the Hallelujah ride with a chestnut that was barely under saddle and that thing carried around 250 lbs. through 25 miles of sand and had super heart rates. I was impressed with it. It had very good bone, slightly resembled a Tennessee Walking Horse but was not at all gaited. Kinda narrow but deep like they describe them in the article but good bone. I think he's considering selling that one and focusing on the other but from what I've heard from him I'd rather ride the chestnut. If you're talking about breeding for tough, sounds like their environment has helped them do it. Also, I did a little reading up on the breed and they did DNA testing that did prove they really were decendents of the Spanish Horses like the legends had claimed. He said the preservationists are very anxious for someone to compete them in endurance to prove to others what they think they already know about them.
