Horses can and do spook from lion or bear scent, I've experienced it myself and had a very panicky horse, even though he never saw anything, he smelled a scent on a tree we passed, and was on the verge of bolting. He didn't calm down until we were about 100 yards past that tree. My dogs never reacted, so I know there was nothing still around - just the scent that lingered. Creepy.
