In my somewhat limited experience, five year olds are much easier to start than three year olds. They are closer to physical and mental maturity. The horse I had the absolute easiest time starting was a six year old thoroughbred mare that was barely halter broke. She wa a delight to work with and learned very quickly. Find a good trainer with lots of local references. Sometimes an equine vet will know who is doing a good job in your area.
