That is a common feeling among CTR (After her first year Wendy is an exception, there are others a bunch of whom Wendy usually rode with.) competitors. I can tell you that it is a real load of hogwash, in general experienced CTR horses do not react to anything short of a near lightening strike. My evidence comes from many years listening to the pulse of CTR horses both at the end and during the ride. When something really exciting (like the lightening, or say being kicked at) happens the pulse goes up for about 3 beats and then back to the base. When that did happen, I would always conveniently "loose the count" and start over. Fair is fair.
