Re: [RC] state fair express unofficial ride results - Keith Kibler
Hi Cindy,
I rode the State Fair Express 50 yesterday
with Paula and Sarah. We rode back and forth and often together from mile 12 to
32. They both have really great horses and are both very accomplished endurance
riders. To pay them one further compliment, they are really nice people to boot.
I ride gaited and their arabians tried to teach my mft to trot and I tried to
teach them to gait. Their teaching had more effect. :-)
The ride was very interesting and fun. It was
cold and extremely windy. The wind chill was in the 30s. Paul, the ride manager
is a truely class act. The learing curve on a new race of any type is always an
issue and they will do a few things better next time. For instance, their
needed to be more water on the trails and those of us in the lead of both the 50
and the Ld got to some of the places where things needed to be (like water,
tokens and signs) before those things were there.
As you said, Paula Kaigh won the 50. (I would
really like to know what happed to Sarah Sanders horse DB Khush) There was a
rash of horses with heart rates that would not come down as they normally would.
My wife for instance, was pulled from the lead pack at mile 18? in the Ld
because her mft Lady hit 64 and then went back to 70. Paul said a lot of horses
had that issue and he thought it was the weather.
Any way. We had a great time although the trail was
not the most interesting due to the fact it was a rails to trails conversion.
There were lots of bridges, walkers, and bicycles on the
trail. My mft Blues and I tied at 5th with Molly
Wilson on a arabian gelding named Taleem. I know Guy Worthington finished ahead
of us too as did his mother Jan. I do not know the other woman in the top
6.
They did need more vets as I think about
70 horses started the two events. From a personal perspective, it would be nice
to have the all the vets have an idea that not all the horses would
actually "trot" for the trot out. I ended up getting a "B" at the final vet
check due to the fact that the vet said she could not recognize what my horse
was doing on the trot out. One of the other vets tried explaining it to her but
she still gave me a B and a B on horses attitude because he wouldnt trot. O
well.
It was a very fun ride/race and my wife and I
will go back again.

So I know a lot of you were on the edge of your seats after my last
update :).
Anyway, for those of you who may be interested, here is what I heard at
4:30 - Paula Kaigh won the 50 on her horse DB Dahman. Sarah Sanders on
DB Khrush crossed the finish at the same time, but unfortunately got pulled at
the vetting. What a heartbreak!
In the 25, some of our other barn buddies (fellow boarders at Desertbred
Arabian Stud) finished well as well - Lori Zackrie finished 1st on her horse
Emirah, Emily Speiser finished 2nd, on her horse DB No Regrets and one of the
newbie riders from our barn, Destin, came in 3rd on her horse Desert
Class. This was Destin's first ride, so what a great way to start!
It was the first time for STate Fair Express and I heard that the trail,
(along the Katy Bike Trail in Missouri) was just wonderful.
