Re: [RC] Metabolic syndrome in horses? - Jeanne Slominski

Hi Nina,

Why don't you try the Equine Cushing's list:

Lots of info on treating horses with IR or Cushing's and rotated coffin bones.

Subject: [RC] Metabolic syndrome in horses?

I have an over weight morab, who has been lame for years from ring bone and OCD.  He's been a little more sore when the seasons change from winter to spring.  My farrier had mentioned it was probably due to the ground getting harder in the spring.

This year he was so sore that he was lame on all fours.  The xrays of his front feet showed he has rotated, and the vet felt he had been probably laminitic a little bit each spring.  So now he's locked up in the round pen and on a strict diet.

We drew blood and his T4 was .9, and his insulin was 1026.  My vet has suggested putting him on thyroid suppliment to help him lose wt faster.

So, does this mean he is insulin resistant?  If so, what do I do about that.  My vet is researching this.  Just wondering if anyone knows what the lastest thought on this is.

Thanks,

Nina Vasiliev
