Mel,
IF the mare is separating herself from the herd for long long periods of 
time then I agree with the other post, it may be cancer, I had the same 
situation quite a while back but I knew something was wrong more because 
of the fact he separated himself.  It took an autopsy the hospital to 
finally know it was cancer.
