[RC] Spring Weather - Evelyn Allen

From: "Nancy" <nancy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Subject: [RC]   Oh the Weather

I am so sorry to do this to all you who are stuck inside with the bad
weather, but...  We rode in 70+ degrees today with California poppy, lupine,
wild potato and wild cucumber all in full bloom.

It sounds like heaven, for sure!  You and your horses are very lucky.  Nothing like spring finally arriving and heading out to flowers blooming and birds singing and that crisp feel and smell of the air.

Wanted to add re: blanketing in extreme cold, we have one horse that we absolutely have to blanket every winter.  He's in trouble if we don't - for some reason, he grows very little coat (he is a dark bay).  The others grow coats that are so thick and lush and full, that they rarely need blanketing other than when the weather does weird things like combine rain that then freezes, together with big winds...bad combinations will bring out the blankets and/or have the horses stalled in the barn.  Overall, they are very happy even in the extreme cold, as long as they have lots of good feed, windbreaks, and fresh water.  We never ride them in  temps that drop below -20c though.

It may sound crazy, but I personally will take cooler temps over the hot temps - I just can't take those high temperatures anymore. You can always put more clothes on, but how much can you take off?  :)  If the temperatures ranged from +10 to +20c, I would be perfectly happy.
