Re: [RC] Heavy Riders - Nancy SturmFor those of you who have many miles on gaited horses, what is the preferred gait of the horse over the majority of the distance? Do you think there would be a difference between LD and Endurance distances? Hi Mel, There will be others with LOTS more experience riding gaited horses over distance, but I have a little Tennessee Walking Horse gelding I've been doing limited distance with. He is multi-gaited and we use them all, including trot. He can fly downhill gaiting and rack in excess of 12 mpg (GPS), but I pretty much choose the rate of speed and he chooses the gait - within reason of course. If I were going to go shopping for another TWH, I'd look at good working ranch and mountain horse lines. Mine goes back to some big show horses and he's a little on the hot side. Ask me in a couple of years and I'll see if I can report on riding LD on one of my Icelandics.
