Re: [RC] Shoulder surgery - rides2far

Has anyone had the personal experience of having shoulder joint
replacement(s)? I would be interested in hearing any experiences.
Recovery time? And what are you able to do, or not do, afterwards?

Joe Harris is a friend of mine who had shoulder replacement after being
run over by a loose horse (electric corral escapee) at the Longstreet's
Charge ride. His joint shattered (they said it looked like a gunshot
wound). The doctors said a shoulder replacement is worse than knee or
hip. It took lots of physical therapy. He isn't supposed to use a
chainsaw or anything that causes vibration. He never rode his horse again
after the accident, just retired her in my neighbor's field and I feed
her. It was just a risk he didn't consider worth taking. Joe was very in
to rowing (sculling) and did a 25 mile row every year before his surgery.
I don't think the doctors ever thought he'd do it again but he does (not
sure if he's done the 25 again though). I doubt very seriously that
they'd recommend replacing that joint for simple arthritis or anything
like that. If you're seriously considering it I can give you his phone
number.
