Re: [RC] Putrid pus from left nostril - desertrydr1

Don, I would be very reluctant to give antibiotics without a specific diagnosis and culture-and-sensitivity.  The main reason there are so many bugs out there that can no longer be killed by the common antibiotics is that people give them when they aren't necessary, give the wrong antibiotic for the bug, or don't finish the course.  If it is truly a flu bug, it's a virus, which antibiotics don't touch.  The horse gets better in two weeks or so no matter what you do.  If you give the wrong antibiotic, you kill a few of the weaker bacteria, and the rest go on to develop immunity/resistance to the antibiotic you used.  Each type of bacteria is sensitive to certain types of antibiotics.  Some are broad spectrum, but it doesn't mean they will work on ALL bacteria.

It's becoming a very serious problem in public health that so many bacteria are becoming antibiotic resistant.

As for the gelding in question, what did the vet recommend?  It may be a virus, a bacterial infection, a bad tooth, a foreign object, or something else.  The best thing to do if your own vet is stumped is to get a second opinion.  You can ask him to recommend another vet, or get a recommend from a friend.  It's probably a good idea to culture the discharge to determine if it is a bacterial infection, and if so, what antibiotics it might be sensitive to.   jeri

Hi Dyane,
I'm not a vet, my horses have all had at one time or another some kind of flu with their nose dripping terrible yellow nasty pus and I would suspect that your horse will have pus on both sides real soon. I'd give 20cc PennG twice a day for 6 days. Use warm Penn, rotate around the horse, neck and butt, left and right, rub injection site firmly and hand walk for a bit. All got well and no other problems. If it takes 2 weeks until the horse seems fine then I wait 2 more weeks before any real work. I did ride them after 6 days but only at the walk for an hour or so to keep everything moving along.
