An eye for an eye means that the punishment should not be greater than the crime. Its not about revenge, its about not chopping a hand off for stealing a loaf of bread. When a roaming dog came to our ranch the first time - he got our geese, the second, he got a cat. It took awhile to find out who his owner was - I went and spoke to the lady and explained what he was doing; yes of course she would keep him at home. But when my purebred English springer spaniel came into heat, there he was - every morning, every evening. We got thru that cycle with a lot of effort,so when the next one came, I went to the lady and said --pleeeese keep your dog home these next 2 weeks. The next morning he was back, literally on our doorstep. One night our dog slipped out the door and there he was, one happy chow daddy-wanabe. Not only did she get pregnant, she got brucellosis - requiring her to be neutered and leaving us without chance for ESS puppies. ( We did get 9 chow/spaniel cross puppies though.. ) When the dog came back again the next time, I tried to get him in our truck to take to the pound. He growled at me. The next time he came back, my husband shot him. I like to live my life peacefully and in harmony with my neighbors, but sometimes you have to take a hard line to do so.
