RE: [RC] hard keeper - Mike LewisI think this is the point we're at with Nafal right now... have a dentist coming out to check his teeth next week, so appreciate the guidance here regarding power tools. I want the job done strictly by hand. The dentist already commented on the possible lack of "good tooth" so we'll see what happens. I like the idea of wetting down Nafal's feed, as has been suggested here. Thank you, Mike --- heidi@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx wrote: --------------------------------- One certainly CAN do an adequate float with hand tools--it just takeslonger and takes more effort. That said, since hand tools work more slowly, they also don't makeerrors very fast, either. I personally don't want a dentist using power tools on my horse that has not already gotten highly proficient with hand tools, and who is conservative and knows when to switch over and do the finish work by hand. Additionally, geriatric horses often have very little tooth left, andone can easily go too far with power tools if one is at all aggressive with them. It is very easy to do more harm than good in geriatric horses if one gets carried away. Often all one can do is remove the painful stuff, if the mouth of an old horse is very bad at all. Heidi Get teeth checked to to make sure the back teeth are meeting and there are no sharp points. The only way to get thoseback teeth down is with power tools (at least that is what a vet toldme). =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
