There is a completely safe, and quiet way to keep warm in a LQ all night. 1. Set up with two or more large deep cycle batteries. Properly done this will run things for a minimum of 3 cold October days in MN. You can run a generator to recharge during the day and extend for as long as you want. In sunny areas solar panels are also an option. 2. Purchase and install a modern, outside air, propane furnace. I said a furnace not one of the ventless inside heaters, catalytic or not. A true furnace has the combustion space completely separated from the LQ by steel heat exchanger. When the thermostat calls for heat, a fan turns on. If there were to be a propane leak, the fan drawing outside air into the combustion space and venting it back out, will clear any fumes. This prevents any explosion. There is a switch that verifies that the air is actually moving. This prevents the flame from igniting if the fan breaks or the outside air vents are obstructed. When all is OK a spark starts the flame. If the thermocouple does not verify that there is a flame, the sparker tries two more times. If no verified flame the gas valve shuts off. This also prevents explosions. By this time, the fan is blowing hot air into the LQ. If the air outlets have been blocked (say by wet clothing stupidly hung to dry), the temperature goes up and the furnace shuts off to prevent a fire. While I suppose, all of these safeguards could fail, an electric heater could also short out and start a fire or electrify a grill and electrocute someone. My bottom line: Spend the money and set up properly and you can be safe and quiet. We just spent a month camped out in our LQ. We did plug in in AZ, but for the nights comming and going we ran on batteries. We were warm and toasty even during the snowstorm in Ogden UT.
