Re: [RC] [RC] Starting the middle aged horse in distance riding - Maryben Stover

My first endurance horse was a Quarter/Morgan cross I bought from a rent stable.  He was built straight up and down with really short and steep pasterns.  We rode him in shows, me Western and Becky rode him English and in jumping classes.  We just did not tell him he was prone to lameness.  Heck, we didn't know either.  His first race was Drakes Bay 50 and he was about 16 at the time.  He finished just fine.  He did several more 50's, some ride and ties and his last LD when he was about 22.  He died when he was 36.  His ages are all approximate and depend on whether he was really 10 when I bought him......................mb

Kim,

My old mare did not really start till 10. She had done a CRT or two when
she was 8 but I bred her and by the time we got back to it she was 10.
She did fine. She had about 1800 endurance miles when I retired her at
15 since I wanted to breed her again. Of those 600 were 100's.

The good thing about older horses is you are not starting completely
from scratch with tendons and ligaments. These will be a lot tougher
than they would be on a 4 yo.
