RE: [RC] Starting the middle aged horse in distance riding - heidi

Hi everyone,

How many have you started an already broke 10 year old or older horse for distance riding and how long did the horse hold up for you?  How many miles and competitive years were you able to achieve with the horse?

Thanks so much.

Kim

I started a 13-year-old broodmare who had NOT been broke to ride before--did one CTR her first year under saddle, about 5 rides as a 14-year-old, kicked her back out in the broodband and had a junior rider pick her back up at age 17 to win our regional junior standings and place in the AERC Junior Top 10 (back when we had that).  The next year she had a baby, but I realized she was close to her 1000-mile medallion, so I took her on two 80-milers that fall after she weaned her foal and got that.  She did over 1000 miles the following season, including some 100s, and she Top Tenned all but one ride that year.  She was 19 then.  I took her on one more ride later, and I'm sure she could have gone on and done more, but she was back in the brood band, and was also somewhat handicapped by having mild COPD (which she had long before I started riding her, so it took careful management of her feed to keep her from coughing).

We've started other older horses, and it is no trouble at all.
