RE: [RC] Differences in Horse Strength - Smith, Dave

Thanks, Dr. Q. It is, indeed, a very interesting article. Is there any
definitive way of finding out whether one's horse has more or less of
the desired (for endurance) Type I muscle makeup. I get from your
article that if you have an Arab or TB, that would be easy. But I have
a five-yr old Nevada mustang so I have no clue what's in his pedigree.
He appears to have a bit of draft in him since his feet are feathered
and he has pretty large hooves for his size which is just at 15 hands.
But his body looks more like a quarter horse with well defined body
muscle and powerful hips and butt. He is compact, weighing in about
1,000 lbs. Not rangy at all. People tend to notice him because he is
very handsome (huge eyes and lots of chrome), graceful and athletic.
His back is short and well rounded in cross section -- I have trouble
keeping his saddle from slipping from side to side. I don't know what
kind of endurance horse he's going to make since last ride season was
devoted to developing a good, reliable trail horse. This season we'll
work on LDs with maybe a 50 miler at the end. So, short of actually
doing endurance, is there a method to tell his muscle makeup?

Here is an article that adds to the mix of the variables of how horses

do their work, and why they perform differently under various workloads.

Size, conformation, fitness, muscle mass and type, vascular competence,
heart size, electrolyte metabolism---all these and more determine how
much weight a horse can carry, how far, and how fast. Interesting
reading. Dr Q
