[RC] Time and Money... - Julie Pearsall

Sounds familiar.   I've been riding (again) for the last five years.  I CHOOSE to spend time with my husband and son.  Hubby retires in two years and 'the boy' goes off to college in 3 1/2.  At that point I'll be less conflicted about spending time with my horse.  Lucky for me, my husband and I are teachers, so all three of us have loads of time in the summer and 20 hours a week at the barn doesn't bite into family time so badly.

Notice the teacher part.  We are decidedly NOT wealthy.  Riding is my vacation, my therapy, my luxury, my 'extras.'  I choose to spend my 'spare' dollars on keeping my horse comfortable for the long haul - excellent saddle, vet care, feed, etc.  I go without, but then, being with my horse makes me happier than 'things' anyway.

It's been said.  Riding is a choice, like everything else in life.  I make choices I won't regret, and remind myself of that when I hug my boy and realize that in the long run he is SO MUCH more important than a horse.  I will never regret the time I spend with him, so missing a few hours on horseback doesn't get me in a twist.  Life is a balancing act.  Your guts/emotions are the fulcrum.

Trust your gut.  Decide what you want to see when you look back on your life.  You'll know what 'success' is.

Good luck

Julie
