[RC] Question for older riders - susan cooper

Well, I'm sorta older (45) but my question is for the
even older :') My mother is 74 and has ridden her
whole life, but consistantly the last 5 years (she had
a 20 year hiatus). She rides anywhere from 5-10 miles
at a time right now, and decided the other day that
she thinks she can do a 25. So, I am going to bring
my newly saddle trained Icelandic along slowly with my
mother with our (hopefully) goal of doing a 30
mid-April. My question has to do with the best way to
help my mother's knee pain so she doesn't loose heart
and quit. She's had one knee replacement, and there
isn't much the Dr. can do to alleviate her discomfort
in that knee. Ibuprophin is out because of other meds
mom is on. Her natural knee is helped with Syn-Vist
(sp?) so when is the optimal time for her to get
another injection prior to our ride in mid-April?
Would anyone suggest some of those stick on hot packs
for knees while she is riding? Do those elastic knee
braces sold in Wal-Mart do any good? Are there any
wrap-around knee massagers with heat she can use at
night while watching TV before bed? Has anyone ever
done a trot out with a walker? (Just kidding, I will
do that for her!) She did say she will need her
walker at the end of the ride, and I told her not to
worry, her walker will fit in my truck!
