Sherman asked,?
Do you currently have any saddle that fits both your daughter and Benny?
You don't need an endurance saddle if the saddle you already have fits
well.
No. ?I don't care that the saddle be made specifically for endurance. ?I would like a pony saddle though, and many of these are poorly made, super-stiff, awkward things that might hurt a pony over any sort of distance. ?
Benny seems big to me, like a small Arab, but when I put tack on him that fits my mutton-withered Arab mare, it overwhelms his body, and I suddenly realize he really is a pony, not just a small horse. ?Even trim horse-sized saddles put the rider too far back on his back. ?Also, my Freeform is ok for my daughter--I set up an extra pair of kid-length leathers & stirrups for her in fact-- but the wide twist is a bit hard on her tiny body after a bit. ?She's all of 52 pounds, tall and very very skinny, and consequently, not terribly strong yet. ?I wouldn't mind a western saddle with a narrower twist and a low, wide horn that might give her a little something to hang onto. ?
I guess I'm assuming there is a saddle out there specifically made for a pony. ?Everything I see in stores around here is either: 1) a cheezily made, narrow-treed western with narrow, killer horns, or 2) an all-purpose which I don't think gives enough security--plus I have an inexplicable hatred for all-purpose saddles--something about riding in one for years until I learned that the saddle was the sole source of my shoulder, neck, and back problems. ?
Hey, there's an idea. ?A dressage saddle solved my woes back then. ?Anyone know if there are reasonably priced, pony-sized dressage saddles out there????
