If you have dark colored gravel or ashes from your fireplace or wood
stove, if you sprinkle it lightly over snow or ice it will melt really
fast.

The dark color absorbs light even if it's cloudy, and will warm up --
result is quicker melt.  Then you have mud ... ugh.  But at least it's
not as slippery as ice.
