Hello Paul, As you said Wendall Robie did it
long ago, i think in 1924. In 1994 we did it here in Luray, Va. on a 1.57
mile track using 4 horses to see how far 1 person could ride in 24 hrs. It
was at the Page County Fairground and we had spectators tho they faded out as
the day went by. Garnet Gallant came down from Nova Scotia and Chryssie
Unser went the furtherest at 163 miles. I was there and went 140. I
had never been so tired and beat up on any 100 i ever did. We used Gates
into holds and each horse had to pass a Vet inspection before the laps were
computed. Dr. Jeannie Waldron vetted it and we came into the arena at 5 am
in a white stretch limosine to our horses and rode out in the mist. It was
surreal.
They did it up in Canada twice and went over 200
miles.
We raised over 5K$ for St. Judes Childrens
Hospital.
It was NOT boring to the riders or our crews.
It was one of the high adventures of my life. It may not be for everyone
but it is for some.
Think outside the box and don't let anyone stop you
from something you want to do. If you're interested i can send you some of
the data from the event. tom sites
