[RC] Horse can't swallow - Bruce Weary DC

Hi Laura--
The symptoms you are describing are very possibly coming from what is called an upper motor neuron lesion, a cranial nerve defect, or brain/spinal cord pathology that is causing any combination of these. An MRI would be very helpful in diagnosing the problem. There may be some rare and remote infections that could cause those problems, but "when you hear hoof beats, think horses, not zebras." The reason the food is coming back out through her nose is the swallowing mechanism has been compromised, possibly from paralysis, soft palate defect, or other mechanism that is supposed to keep food moving the right direction. Good luck to your friend and her horse. Dr Q
