[RC] Invitationals - k s swigartLinda Marins said: How can any endurance "race" that is composed of only hand-picked invited competitors--or whose field is so vastly skewed in favor of only hand-picked invited competitors--be considered a Fair competition? There are multitudes of sports that hold "invitational" (as opposed to "open") events. An Invitational is an event with restricted entries, an open event is one that is open to all comers. And yes, event organizers in many different sports have been known to hold "personal invitationals" which means that they specific individuals based on their own selection criteria. People who want to hold prestigeous events where the outcome is meaningful will restrict their invitations to only those competitors who are considered "the best." People who want to throw a good party restrict their invitations to competitors they like. It is up to the participants and the spectators to determine just how meaningful a victory is among a restricted participants list. However, the AERC National Championship and the Race of Champions, because they had restricted entries and required qualification are both technically speaking "invitationals." kat Orange County, Calif. :) "If the end justifies the means, everybody is justified."
