[RC] Competitiveness -- Pasture & Riding Too - Val Nicoson

I have a gelding and a mare who are both very competitive both in the pasture and while we're out riding with them.  In the pasture both wants to be the herd boss in our small herd.  The gelding has maintained his herd boss status but the mare is just waiting for her opportunity <g>.

Meanwhile whenever we ride these two out on training/conditioning rides they are both very competitive with one another.  This mare cannot stand for this gelding to be in the front much at all, else she gets to be quite a handful and sassy and willing to lunge forward and do nearly whatever she can to get ahead.  She's fairly green under saddle but has already done a CTR and placed very well...perhaps race brained too early??

We'd really like to take both these horses out together more but need some ideas on how to go about getting them to work together better and being more managable to ride as a result.

Thanks,
Val
