RE: [RC] Is Beet Pulp Toxic To Horses? The Real Story - Susan E. Garlinghouse, DVMWhich brings to mind a question I've had lately. Does beet pulp cause "race brain"? I'm mixing beet pulp with a senior feed (less protein) and extra hay at night for my mare, and now my reasonable on the trail mare has major race brain for the first time. Is is the beet pulp or the senior feed or the combination??? Or is my mare just fit and feeling good for the first time? Could be any of the above, although the fiber content of beet pulp by itself (which, BTW, is very digestible) wouldn't cause race brain. If the beet pulp has a noticeable residual sugar content (some do, most don't), or contains a fair amount of molasses (tends to be higher in pelleted beet pulp than the shredded), then that might be a factor. Or, it might be some molasses content in the senior feed. Or, she just might be feeling good. :-) Susan Garlinghouse, DVM =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
