RE: [RC] i'll take Mares vs Geldings and Stallions for 2 pointsplease... - Diana Peterson
You are soo right. It is a rider issue. I have been on a ride ..where this lady rode one of her stallions and her friend rode the other stallion. It was a dissaster from the start. The friend was not that good a rider she was following her friend.( face tight and fear in her eyes )., and when they passed us on the trail ...( the first lady telling her friend..." just keep you legs on and drive him ..." the stallions where sooooo wound up the riders could hardly hold on to them and they seemed to be just along for the ride.
A short while later we heard people screem for help..
I found out later....the second stallion didched his rider and took off...attaching some friends of our who where ahead of us on the trail. The stallion tryed to attach my friends gelding and it was chaos.
On the other hand my friend Melissa has a stallion . www.sweettalkerfarms.com His name is Kan...he is an absolut gentleman. She told me he has been handled all of his live. She had hired some collage kids who played with with him..like grooming and just rubbing there hands all over him. When they go to rides you would NEVER now he is a stallion. Very calm .. no yelling for the mares.... nothing. He acts like a gelding. and he rides with us all the time at training rides and never missbehaves. AND he is a breeding stallion also , so he knows what a mare is...he is just not a mindless breeder who thinks EVERY mare is his ....lol
So yes I believe it has a lot to do how they are raised .

hi, just wondering, seeing as how this came up on the list of possible topics ;) why would stallions be unwelcome? i have to say, i had pre-concieved notions about stallions until i worked with them, and honestly, i have one here at the farm who is oh-so-better behaved than ANY of my mares, and even some of my geldings, one in particular.
are they an issue on a ride? and honestly, isn't that issue maybe more a rider issue than an animal issue? i would think everyone would beexpected to bring a relatively well behaved animal on a ride. my mare, is a a hussy! lol ! i know she'd LOVE to see stallions on a ride, however, as um, cheap as she is, she is still VERY managable, she will just run down the trail with her tail to the side the whole time, i'm sure. :)
