Re: [RC] 1st endurance ride story - Skymont - rides2farOK, I feel guilty. I'm the one who was Susan's one chance at an "endurance contact" and I didn't have a broke/shod/sound horse to ride with her when she'd contacted me last summer. :-( Anyway, I read Susan's blog and wish she'd post it on RC. Well written, not a lot of fluff but entertaining. Simply the telling of it showed me she'd absorbed a lot of info already and just has to get some experience. My impression is she's a keeper. Did a lot of things right. Probably would have helped a lot to ride with someone with experience just for confidence and reassurance that she was doing things right. It's definitely no shame to try 50 at Skymont and not make it. The completion rate was around 66%. There were lots of good, experienced rider/horse teams that didn't finish. It's harder on the horses than you realize to negotiate loose rocks under leaves on a twisting turning course. Not much chance to just relax and cruise. Wish I'd been in camp to hook you up with a high line. I'd have talked you into it. >g< (I had to go back to Chattanooga to a football game and didn't get back till midnight..never miss a chance to wake folks up) I still think you did the right thing entering the 50. Like you said, you *knew* you could do 25. If you'd done 25 and finished, what would you have learned? I went 75 miles twice this year with no completion. Do I wish I'd entered the 50? No. Do I wish I had those 75 miles on my record? Yeah, but that's the breaks. The next 100 will be all the sweeter. :-) Angie McGhee =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
