[RC] 1st endurance ride story - Skymont - Marta Kozlowskagood story. thanks for taking the time to write it. we attempted our first 50 this september. we quit after the first (20 mile) loop. i knew we were going to quit even before we got back. the vet was going to let her go but i knew she couldn't do it b/c the terrain turned out to be much more difficult than i anticipated and to top it off she tore one of her front boots off early on and i had to use the hind boot as a replacement which meant she had no protection in the front. i felt good about that decision and then about 15 minutes later i started beating up on myself for 'quitting.' i guess it's just human nature. or at least this human's nature;) anyway, plenty of non-arabs out there competing and completing. my mare isn't an arab either. i took it as a lesson. i didn't do any permanent damage to my mare. in fact, i refoamed her front boot and the next morning i went out for just a fun ride before heading home. keep training and try again. and remember that there are horses who do 50's successfully and then all of a sudden they don't complete for whatever reason. so just b/c you complete one the first time, doesn't mean you won't have a problem in the future. maybe it has nothing to do with his condition. maybe it was the cold? maybe it was the night on the trailer? anyway, thanks for sharing your experience. i'm looking forward to reading all the advise you'll get:) marta =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
