Re: [RC] legs - what do you do, multi days - Dessia Miller
Polos tend to hold heat in more than you would want
to and if wrapped incorrectly and left on will tend to bow or stress the
tendons. I dislike wrapping to trailer unless I have a horse that needs it for a
specific reason or injury. If it is hot, wraps just make it hotter, if they get
to sweating under them, it gets itchy and agrevating and they want them off,
which leads to stomping and stepping on themselves.
Having done only one multi-day so far, I did wrap
on the 2nd night after feeling a bit of puffiness before bedtime. A bit of
rubbing alchohol and/or green cool and wraps as he didn't move much all night
(layed down sleeping and eating mostly) did the trick and his legs were cool and
tight in the morning.
I have wrapped several hundred legs over the years
when I was working with the standardbreds. We used fairly thin cottons for the
most part and I continue to do so, but you do have to be careful.
I've used the No-Bows and cotton
wraps as well for overnight or for trailering - used them on my old boy.
A couple of followup questions -- why are polo wraps overnight a no-no?
I've can't remember using them overnight, but then again, I had never
heard that it wasn't a good idea.
I do use polo wraps as trailer wraps, as it is easier than using No-bows
and cotton wraps. Any opinions as to that? I've never had a problem with
them, and I've used them that way for years. ( I never wrap **tight**,
just snug. )
