RE: [RC] Generators at 3:30 a.m. - Susan E. Garlinghouse, DVMAn interesting presentation given by Joe Pagen of KER at the AERC convention held in Lexington showed that grain meals showed it would be preferable to feed grain meals at least 4 hours before the start of a ride. This was based on the insulin curve after feeding grain. The same advice was given by one of our speakers at the SERA convention some years ago. The latter might have been me (or I was one of several through the years) and it's been in my seminar powerpoints for at least nine years or so, so it's definitely not shiny new information anymore. I think some of the original data was presented by the KER group in Japan ICEEP meetings in '97 if memory serves. There's also been good supporting data from Laurie Lawrence's group at Univ of KY, and from Ray Geor (though I think he was still with KER at the time). Anyway, it's not just an abstract theory, the data is very solid. There's just no good physiologic reason to feed concentrates after midnight the night before. Let alone if it involves waking up your neighbors who would probably appreciate some good sleep. :-) Susan Garlinghouse, DVM =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
