Don't forget that each state can and does enact its own laws.  For example:

WI:  You can not legally carry concealed anywhere any time, but except in a 
few cities open carry is perfectly legal, but almost never seen outside of 
hunting season.

MT: You can carry legally either open or concealed except within cities. 
Concealed carry permits are easy to obtain and good anywhere except in bars 
and few other areas.  Open carry is common on trails, and gets a few looks 
in towns.
