My daughter's QH gelding saw his mom for the first time after having been
separated for a year. Porthos knew him mama immediately and she knew him. She
treated him horribly, just did not want him back. She was in foal at the time.
He called and called to her as we left. It was heart breaking. She, on the
other hand, was glad to see him go. I think that he was never really weaned
until they were separated, when he was just 2. I think she thought that he was
back for good. The stallion connection is fasinating. I guess in the wild
horse herds, it would be necessary as I know stallions will kill foals that
are not their own if they take over a herd. That is what I have been told/read
anyway. Not a blanket statement, mind you. I know better than to
make "blanket" statements on this list. Beccy

Dam/foal connections are
pretty strong--but then they spent time together. It is the sire/foal
connection that I find so
fascinating.
