[RC] TBs for endurance - k s swigartGP said: i've heard "conflicting testimony" as it were... thoroughbreds are AND arent good for endurance.. based on conformation. Any "definitive" experiences out there? I have competed for years on a thoroughbred and have a new one that I am currently bringing along. Speaking in generalities (about the breed itself not individuals within the breed) the thoroughbred traits that may keep you from successfully doing endurance with one include: their temperament (not for everybody), their hoof quality (tb feet have never been selected for their ability to withstand going on hard groud), and old race track injuries (which don't count if you have one that was never trained for the track...and their are lots of them). Conformationally, they (as a breed) are much BETTER than Arabians (as a breed), since no TB breeder every had "pretty head, tail set, flat croup, sausage body, or llama look-alike" as a selection criteria. And one conformational trait that virtually ALL of them share (I suspect that there are a few individuals that don't) is a good back....and that most important trait of a riding horse...a good place to put the saddle. kat Orange County, Calif. :) "Le meilleur que je sais les hommes le plus que j'aime mon cheval."--Catherine the Great =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
