[RC] Can horse with Allegies compete? - michelleI have a horse that I've owned since the spring of 2005. I competed her in 3 LD rides. No allergies. The next summer I was pregnant and didn't ride her but she came down with hives all over her body and neck. She had them from May to Oct. She was itchy. My vet checked her. And gave me some antihistime (Tri-hist granuales) It really didn't seem to help much. She still had them bad. I tried coating her in fly spray. Changing her feed. Everthing I could think of expect pulling her off pasture. I hated to do that to her. Then this summer she got them again. But not quite as bad. Which I figure is due to the drought we are having. Not as much pollen or gnats. Two of the most likely suspects for her reactions. She doesn't have a breathing problem. And I sort of did some conditioning with her this summer. A few 12 mile rides and one 20 miler with lots and lots of short rides. She did fine on them even the 20 mile ride that we flew threw in just under 3 hours. I'd like to do some LD with her next year. But I'm not sure if I should even consider it with her allergies. The vet says she feels bad and is itchy when she's all broke out. FYI she's an 8 year old Arab mare. Any information would be appreciated. m i c h e l l e @ n e t a t i c . c o m =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
