Re: [RC] [RC] Best People Shoes for Ride and Tie - Barbara McCrary

I get no support at all from Terrains, and as I mentioned earlier, they are far too wide for my foot. I do have a pair of orthotics in them, but they're still no good for me.

I was cursing at my Terrains riding the weekend before at Mt. Diablo. We had to get off the horses and scramble down a lot of rock and silty steep trail. Having no traction meant that sliding down a rock on my butt was preferable to slipping onto my rear! I felt like I was slipping on a banana peel a few times. No ankle support either.

My Ariat paddock boots would have done better in this situation than the Terrains. Terrains are comfy, but they also don't have the support that the paddock boots give me, so I feet feel more fatigued in the Terrains.

Mike, yes it is always ok to run with your horse at a ride. I personally ride F/T in New Balance Trail shoes. They are a running shoe with a bit higher profile, and a very aggressive tread. I am always off my horse on steep downhills, so I got tired of slipping with my Ariat Terrains and went to a trail shoe. All the major brands of running shoes make a trail shoe, you just have to figure out which brand fits your foot. I did end up going a half size bigger to give me toe room like I like when I ride distance though.

I am considering ride and tie... or at least running part of the distance of endurance races on foot next to the horse. In my training, I tried riding in my running shoes and suffered for about 3 weeks thereafter with ankle/muscle pain.

What style shoes do most ride and tie folks wear when running? I assume the shoes must pull double duty and be suitable when riding the horse.

I have found my Ariat riding shoes to be OK for running, but not ideal. Traction is poor and the shoes limit my speed.

Finally, how can I find out which rides are ride and tie? I assume it is OK to run next to the horse on AERC sanctioned endurance rides, just to train?

Thank you,

Mike
