Re: [RC] [RC] Best People Shoes for Ride and Tie - Barbara McCrary

In addition to Ranelle's message: After reading so many opinions on wearing wool socks to ride in, I tried a couple of pair. They are Wigwam midweight socks and I took them to Mongolia with me, along with my New Balance 747 Country Walkers. I was astounded to discover the following: 1) I could wear the same pair for 4-5 days without their feeling dirty. 2) The wool is soft and cushioning, so my feet were comfortable. 3) Even in the heat and humidity of Beijing, China, my feet never felt hot.
All this is adding up to a suggestion that you wear midweight wool socks for your riding and running, and perhaps your feet will feel better than if you wore some other sort of sock. I have no advice regarding your sore ankles, but I think for ride & tie you'll have to wear a very good running shoe. It's a tough sport. I'm an awful runner, but 25 years ago I actually ran a 41 mile R & T race and survived, along with several others after that one.
I cannot wear Arial Terrains for walking or running, as they are far too wide for my feet. I ride in Ariat Performers, but couldn't walk very far in them, let alone run. They are too rigid and have no cushioning. Just my experiences.

Mike, yes it is always ok to run with your horse at a ride. I personally ride F/T in New Balance Trail shoes. They are a running shoe with a bit higher profile, and a very aggressive tread. I am always off my horse on steep downhills, so I got tired of slipping with my Ariat Terrains and went to a trail shoe. All the major brands of running shoes make a trail shoe, you just have to figure out which brand fits your foot. I did end up going a half size bigger to give me toe room like I like when I ride distance though.

I am considering ride and tie... or at least running part of the distance of endurance races on foot next to the horse. In my training, I tried riding in my running shoes and suffered for about 3 weeks thereafter with ankle/muscle pain.

What style shoes do most ride and tie folks wear when running? I assume the shoes must pull double duty and be suitable when riding the horse.

I have found my Ariat riding shoes to be OK for running, but not ideal. Traction is poor and the shoes limit my speed.

Finally, how can I find out which rides are ride and tie? I assume it is OK to run next to the horse on AERC sanctioned endurance rides, just to train?

Thank you,

Mike
