[RC] different ride times? - rides2farthe example assumes that you are riding forward at a minimum pacefor> > 10.5 hrs and never stop or pause to give your horse water, let him graze> > for a minute, take a break other than vet cks, etc. I've competed on 3 Appaloosas, one mule, a Standardbred and various Arab purebreds & crosses. I've always wanted to ride a pony but haven't had access to the right one yet. The only time I ever went over time was on the mule because she refused to leave the vet check until a slower horse she'd bonded with did...even then we would have made it had the supposed "25 mile" trail that had tons of powerlines been measured more accurately than you can do by laying a string on a topo map (ride manager admitted). I think the 12 hour limit leaves plenty of room for slow. When the winners are doing it in 4-5 hours, you've allowed another 7 hours for everyone else. Before breed or body type I most value a horse that WANTS to do endurance. The reason I switched from my Appaloosas was that my App quit having fun after 25 miles. I could *make* him do 50 but it wasn't fun for me knowing he wasn't wanting to go down the trail. It wasn't that he *couldn't*...he just wasn't enjoying it. I just got back from a long hot ride on Pigeon Mtn. and mine & Josie's horses did not *want* to do that trail today. They obviously had challenged each other to see who could walk the slowest and be the most reluctant. It was miserable. If that's what every day was like I'd be looking for a new horse no matter how much potential this one had. (Oh yeah...I've *got* a new horse! Right now that sounds good!)
