Re: [RC] [RC] cold shoulder, different ride times? - Barbara McCrary
Ah, Becky, is that YOU or your horse that can walk at 4
mph? :-)) I know my very fastest walk, and I think I walk rather
briskly compared to some folks, is 3.5 mph, but I'm really stretching to do
that. Better at 3 mph. That's my walk, not my horse's. If YOU
can walk at 4 mph, my hat is off to you. That's amazing...

Ok, just to put this in to perspective......I CAN
WALK AT 4MPH!!!
If you dally along munching grass, stop for water
frequently etc, and do a mix of walk and trot thru out the day, you can finish
a ride. I have done just that for 14 years now.

<<<AERC time limits have been set for 35
years and all breeds of horses seem capable of finishing within the
limits. If the horse cannot finish 50 miles in 12 hours, which
generally includes about 1.5 hours of mandatory vet checks, then you are
riding too slow. 50 miles divided by 10.5 hours averages 4.76
mph.>>>
the example assumes that you are riding forward at a minimum pace for
10.5 hrs and never stop or pause to give your horse water, let him graze for
a minute, take a break other than vet cks, etc.
I've been doing long, slow recreational distance riding for many years. I
want to give endurance riding a try. I'm just having a hard time wrapping my
mind around the speed. maybe I will surprise myself.
PS. I own a half-draft (don't intend on riding her in endurance) and I
highly doubt she could finish a 50 mile ride in 12 hrs in Texas. Maybe up
north. And my Andalusians would roll their eyeballs and faint if I suggested
it. Not that they couldn't do it, I just doubt they have the desire. :) the
task is left up to my newly acquired Peruvian...he likes to go, but his
little legs don't cover alot of ground!
