In 1975, Lud, I, and our then 15-year-old daughter Janet did a multi-day
ride of our own in Lassen and Modoc Counties (CA). We had a two-horse
trailer and two horses. Janet could drive but didn't have a license, so she
was limited to driving in the "outback" off the main highways. We did some
riding on dirt roads, some on shoulders of paved roads and some on crude
desert roads. We rode all morning, stopped for lunch and to feed and water
the horses. Then we rode after lunch until late afternoon, when we stopped
and set up camp wherever we could. We kept hay in front of the horses all
night. We adults alternated half-day driving, half-day riding, with Janet
riding both segments each day. It was our experience that the horses did
fine, day after day, at about 37 miles per day average. We rode at about a
7 mph pace quite consistently. In 8-1/2 days, we covered 310 miles. It was
an adventure of a lifetime, never to be repeated because of the increased
traffic on Hwy. 395 and the paving over of many of the roads in Forest
Service land.

How many horses started this ride and how many made it through all 10
days?
(Leavened with 3 days of recuperation, I think it was.)

I'm thinking that if you wanted to ride a decent, healthy, fit horse a
long
ways, hundreds of miles, that the reasonable daily distance on flat,
rolling, and occasionally mountainous terrain would be more like 25-30
miles. Like say between the missions at San Francisco and San Diego. 50
miles doesn't seem do-able unless with an exceptional horse.

Mike Sherrell
