Re: [RC] feeding flax seed - Don Huston

I gave flax seed for almost 2 years to 1 horse. My feed store ordered 50lb bags for $28. I bought a coffee bean grinder (big one looked like a blender), ground a full cup of seeds every day (makes almost 2 cups of powder) and mixed the powder with wet grain. The horse is grey and his coat started to actually shine and his hooves improved some....I think. I finally grew tired of the whole process and it has been almost 2 years now since I quit. As far as I can tell the benefits to this horse were not worth the effort. :-[

I bought some natural raw whole flax seed to feed and am wondering? how much??  Do any of you feed flax seed, and if so how much?  Have you seen any noticeable improvements, and if so what??
The bag says 3 TBSP provides 11 grams of fat (1 gram saturated and 0 grams trans fat), 0 cholesterol or sodium, 11 grams carbohydrate (9 grams dietary fiber, 0 sugar) and 6 grams of protein.
One horse is my 18 year old MO Fox Trotter gelding ? cart horse and pleasure/trail - who is currently fed ½ lb Omelene 100 + ½ lb Horse Chow 100 each morning and evening (MSM added in AM feed).  Not sure if I need to give him any.  The other horse is my hopeful endurance horse ? a 5 year old ½ arab, ½ QH gelding ? who is currently fed ¾ lb Ultima + ¾ lb Horse Chow 100 each morning and evening (Biotin added in AM feed).  Both are (usually) on 24/7 turnout with access to good quality round baled hay and fresh water.  My arabX is a palomino, but very light, and I was told the flax seed may bring out his color.
Thanks!
