Re: [RC] just to clarify the question... - Sky RanchOur horses drink cold water and they drink almost as much in the winter as they do when it's hot. The reason I know this is because I have to haul water to our cistern, we're in the country and not on any water system. I fill their horse trough every day, it's about the same as I fill in the summer. I have to chop the ice off the top most days now. Sometimes, though, the horses have already broken through and been drinking before I get out there. They're used to drinking cold water, maybe that's it. I don't know. Putting a tank heater in the tank is not an option since there's no electricity available where the water trough is. (And you're not supposed to use an extension cord with the tank heaters, it says it right there in the instructions..) ANYway, our horses drink ice cold water, without any problems. They do not have problems with colic, or anything else related to water consumption. Knock on wood... And yes, you can definitely watch their droppings -- they should be soft, not hard and dry. My horses' droppings are soft, and look just like they do in the summer.
