RE: [RC] [RC] How to deal with an LCL strain? - Ranelle Rubin

Kristi,

I have lots of ligament issues with my rt knee..(49, skier for 40 yrs, rider for 20-bound to happen) and I have had knee surg on the other knee.

My chiropractor (who is also an endurance rider) has done alot of work on my knee before rides like Tevis for example. He uses ultrasound and electro stim. It helps alot.

He rode with me, said I am riding balanced, but wanted my stirrups shorter. Can you easily get your heels down? I thought my stirrups were perfect too, but after shortening them, my knee does feel better. It did take some getting used to though. I only took them up one hole.

Also, anytime you get off for any reason, and before you get back on, take a minute to draw your heel up to your but and stretch. I lean against my horse's shoulder for balance, which helps.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [RC] How to deal with an LCL strain?
Date: Wed, 26 Sep 2007 07:00:07 -0700 (PDT)

I've recently started having trouble with my left
knee's LCL (lateral collateral ligament) on long
rides. In doesn't hurt/get aggravated during any other
activity except riding. At anywhere from mile 10 to
20, especially while posting a lot, my left knee feels
like it's going to give out and starts to really ache.
Has anyone else here dealt with this, and did you find
a solution? I bought a Professional's Choice knee
brace to see if that will absorb some of the strain
(though I hate to add bulk to that leg), and I'm going
to experiment with shortening my stirrup length,
though I hate to do so because the length they're at
feels 'perfect'. I have a Specialized saddle and have
the stirrups in the farthest back position and feel
very balanced and posting is effortless (well, until
my knee starts giving out) Any ideas? My first 50 is
in less than two weeks and if my knee becomes the weak
link that prevents me from finishing, I'll be soooooo
ticked! : - (

Kristi

Life's a journey, so enjoy the ride (and try not to fall off)
