I was looking at it in terms of the months leading up rather than the closer to ride time frame, There's also the "over conditioning" that breaks the horse down mechanically. You condition too often applying stress but don't give the body time to react to the stress by reinforcing and making it stronger (your goal). The horse gets stronger on REST days *because* of stress days. If you do too many stress days, you add insult to injury and the horse breaks down. 4 days a week for me would be max. I'm happy to get in 3...two short and one long. My short rides are about 7 miles with hills and good footing. My "long ride" will be 5 hours or so of slow crappy rocks with a mountain thrown in.
