However, as a few additional data points: in New England you will find classes at horse shows for "Bridle Path Hack" and "Road Hack." (Road Hack is my all-time favorite Morgan class!) So, it is not just a verb, it is also a noun: the horse you'd ride on a bridle path (fancier than a plain pleasure horse); the horse you'd ride on a road when you're interested in getting somewhere pdq. By extension, it also got to mean an overused, soured livery stable horse, as in "That horse is just a hack."
