[RC] Eye ulcer - peanut2@xxxxxxx

Jamie, I have had experience with an eye ulcer. When my horse was a
yearlling (she is now 16 years old) she managed to scrape her eye on a
nail. She cut her eye 1 inch deep by 1 1/4 inches long. And it ulcerated.
VERY nasty! My vet originally was just going to remove her eye not
believeing it could be saved. But, it just happened there was a vet
traveling through the area that was an eye specialist. My vet asked if she
could call the specialist in. Between them, they decided they might be able
to save my horses eye with surgery. I told them to go for it.

So, they actually removed the cut and ulcerated section of the eye. Then
put in a lavage system as you described it. My vet told me that she
invented the lavage system that is now used and bought as a "kit" on my
horse and it was picked up and pattented by another vet. Anyway,
antibiotics and flushing every 4 hrs. for 3 weeks. About 2 weeks after the
surgery, my horse got her eyesight back in that eye. You could tell because
she was suddenly spooking at everything on that side for a few days! She
has a cloudy area on that eye (scarring) so does not have full vision, but
she certainly can see on that side and has been for with no complications
for the past 15 years.
