[RC] eye injury update for corneal stromal abcess - judibnHello from central Florida, I just read the call for encouragement about another horse that has an eye ucer. Several months ago (March), my one horse, CR Streak O'Luck, came up with consistent running and closing right eye. Long story short, I spent $2500 without surgery, and did the following: lots of vet visits, then 2 weeks at my vets barn where he put in the lavage system to treat with 4 drugs about every 4 hours, then sent me to University of Gainesville to completely rule out an object in the eye. They said no object, but would like to do surgery for $3500-$5000 plus 2 weeks aftercare. And then: he could die from a bacterial infection, abscess was close to the retina so the retina could detach, etc, as side effects. I said No, and continued tx at home. Took his fly mask off first week of June when vet said the abcess had scarred but he couldn't account for what was still irritating the eye/aka tearing/closing. I stopped all treatment and one week later, VOILA! he's been completely better since with no recurrence!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go figure. Vet was skeptical and said wait another week before I celebrated. Well, it's 3 months later, and we hope to be out competing again this year, starting late fall. Hope this helps someone else, and encourages others, as I needed when my little Streak looked so bleak and was sick of all our help. Randi Lavikoff, brooksville,Fl.
