Re: [RC] Heat packs-human - Barbara McCrary

OK, here are my experiences:

1) Bruce is right about not sleeping with a heating pad. I literally blistered my back once doing this.
2) I once had a pinched nerve in my neck that lasted for 5 months. I went to doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and physical therapists. The muscle spasms that resulted from the pinched nerve began within 60 seconds of my arising in the morning (fortunately I could sleep pain-free) and lasted all day. The pain was excruciating, and I don't use that term often. I was crippled with pain for months. The P.T. said use cold packs. So...one morning I got up, the pain and spasms began within seconds and I put on a cold pack while eating breakfast. The pain became worse. So...I reasoned that if cold made it hurt worse, heat might help. It did, beginning right away. I used one Therma-Care patch every day for 10 days, and the spasms went away. That's been two years ago...I hope never to return.
3) Lud uses the patches on his arthritic shoulders when they become unbearable. They help him considerably.
4) Neither of us has ever had a TC patch burn our skin. They just don't get that hot and I've never experienced inconsistent heat with them. Furthermore, my skin is very heat sensitive. I cannot eat or drink anything too thermally hot, nor eat anything that is spicy hot. Forget red pepper sauce and hot Mexican or Chinese food. They will literally blister my mouth. Therma Care patches have never given me any trouble. Go figure....

Bruce, I know you are a professional, but my experiences differ from your advice. I'd make a lousy patient of yours, wouldn't I? I will, however, remember your advice should I have a different kind of injury.

Don't ever invite me out to a Mexican dinner where they serve Jalapeno peppers unless you want to see me breathe fire! ):-0

Barbara

I have to disagree with my friend and sometimes-dinner partner Barbara regarding therapeutic heat. Alternating between ice and heat is called contrast therapy, and is very effective for many conditions.
